Praying With Scripture Rewritten from a devotional by Joni Erickson Tada
"'Is not my word like fire,' declares the Lord, 'and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?'" Jeremiah 23:29
The Word of God is the Christian's true prayer book. The secret to receiving answers to prayer lies in how we use God's Word during prayer time--that's why it's always a good idea to pray next to an open Bible. Do you want to tune your words of praise so they will rise like a beautiful worship song to the Lord? Then fill your praises with glorious words from the Word.
Bring God's Word directly into your intercessions for our church, our search team, and our next pastor. You will bring God's power to bear in their lives when you bring God's Word into your intercessions.
Read portions of Scripture to prime your pump before you pray. Let the Spirit lead you to certain verses to use in your praise and intercessions. Then, develop personal prayers that are enriched by those same verses. God loves to hear His Word when you pray. It's like speaking His language.
Four areas to pray for on behalf of your search team (taken from When the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search)
1. Pray for patience. Pray that the group would wait for God’s timing.
2. Pray that your search committee will have the mind of Christ and agree. Much of the process is subjective. Personal opinions and preferences are involved. Differences can divide. Ask that they would heed Paul’s advice for unity, having the humble attitude of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:1-12, especially vs. 5). It is so easy for us consciously—or unconsciously—to bring our own agendas into church business.
3. Pray for wisdom to choose the right person. Pray that the pastoral search committee will renew their minds in the Bible so that they can have Word-centered wisdom. (Romans 12:1-2).
4. Pray for discipline for your team and other church leaders. Pray for unity and agreement between your leadership and the pastoral search committee.
Lord, we lift our pastoral search committee to You today and pray according to Your Word, that…
They will have an eternal perspective and Christ-like values.
(Matthew 28:18-20; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 1:21)
Matthew 28:18-20 - Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Your Great Commission is that we go ….teach….and baptize. Help ____ to know what his/her part is in this commission and then to obey it.
Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I love by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ____has been crucified with Christ. Nevertheless he/she lives…..in fact Christ lives in him/her. Help him/her to manifest this in all he/she does or says.
Philippians 1:21 - For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Help ___to always be ready to speak out boldly for Christ. I pray that the Lord Jesus might be magnified
They will sense your calling on their lives and their lives will count for Your kingdom. (Psalm 78: 1-8; Psalm 103: 12-18; II Timothy 1: 8-9)
Psalm 78: 1-8 (Read from Bible)
Psalm 103: 12-18 (Read from Bible)
II Timothy 1: 8-9 - So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, but join me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time. May ____never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. Lord, you have saved us and called us to a holy life. May there be a consistent pattern of holiness in ____’s life.
