Praying With Scripture     Rewritten from a devotional by Joni Erickson Tada

"'Is not my word like fire,' declares the Lord, 'and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?'"  Jeremiah 23:29

The Word of God is the Christian's true prayer book. The secret to receiving answers to prayer lies in how we use God's Word during prayer time--that's why it's always a good idea to pray next to an open Bible. Do you want to tune your words of praise so they will rise like a beautiful worship song to the Lord? Then fill your praises with glorious words from the Word.

Bring God's Word directly into your intercessions for our church, our search team, and our next pastor.  You will bring God's power to bear in their lives when you bring God's Word into your intercessions.

Read portions of Scripture to prime your pump before you pray. Let the Spirit lead you to certain verses to use in your praise and intercessions. Then, develop personal prayers that are enriched by those same verses. God loves to hear His Word when you pray. It's like speaking His language.

Four areas to pray for on behalf of your search team (taken from When the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search)

1.  Pray for patience.  Pray that the group would wait for God’s timing.

2.  Pray that your search committee will have the mind of Christ and agree.  Much of the process is subjective. Personal opinions and preferences are involved.  Differences can divide.  Ask that they would heed Paul’s advice for unity, having the humble attitude of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:1-12, especially vs. 5).  It is so easy for us consciously—or unconsciously—to bring our own agendas into church business.

3. Pray for wisdom to choose the right person.  Pray that the pastoral search committee will renew their minds in the Bible so that they can have Word-centered wisdom. (Romans 12: 1-2).

4. Pray for discipline for your team and other church leaders.  Pray for unity and agreement between your leadership and the pastoral search committee.

Lord, we lift our pastoral search committee to You today and pray according to Your Word, that…

They will see other people as You do, treating them with love and kindness. (Matthew 25:35-40; Romans 12:10; Philippians 2: 1-4)

You will protect them from emotional, physical, and spiritual danger.
 (Psalm 28: 7-9; Psalm 41; John 17:15; II Thessalonians 3:3)

Psalm 28: 7-9 (Read from Bible) - Lord, you are ____’s strength and his/her shield from every danger. May joy rise in his/her heart until he/she bursts out in songs of praise to You.
Psalm 41 (Read from Bible)

John 17:15 - My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them for the evil one. Keep ___from evil and sanctify him/her through Your Word. Your Word is truth.
II Thessalonians 3:3 - But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. Help ____to be gentle, patient, and kind. Free him/her from the love of money, wine, and quarreling.

I Kings 3:11-12 - So God said to him, ”Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

I Timothy 1:5 - The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Give to____ a pure heart, a clean mind, and a strong faith.

Daniel 6:3 - Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

They will be caught if they wander into cheating, lies, or mischief. (Psalm 119:71; Proverbs 20:30)

Psalm 119:71 - It is good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. Your punishment, Lord, is often the best thing that can happen to us,  May ____respond to your chastening by paying attention to Your laws. Those laws are more valuable than millions in silver & gold.

Proverbs 20:30 - Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.

You will help them to be godly, loving, and faithful spouses. (Ephesians 5:21)

Ephesians 5:21 - Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
